Ecotoxicology of heavy metal contamination of Neotropical bats.

Although bats are responsible for many ecosystem services on which humans depend, they are frequently exposed to multiple anthropogenic stressors. Heavy metal (HM) exposure is an emerging threat of great significance to bats, yet the toxicity threshold for most metallic elements remains unknown. The greatest diversity of bats worldwide is in the Neotropical region, where ecotoxicological studies are scarce. Thus, this review provides a current overview of the knowledge available on HMs contamination of Neotropical bats. Analysis of the results of 17 articles published between 2000 and 2023 documented a trend of increasing interest in the topic, although it is incipient and in few countries. Of the 226 species known for the Neotropics, 95 have been investigated for metal concentrations. Seven different matrices were used to assess concentrations of heavy metals in tissues, with fur being the subject of eight studies, highlighting the search for non-invasive analysis. Twenty-one HMs were detected in bats, with mercury being the most common. The highest concentrations of this HM were detected in insectivorous/omnivorous bats, highlighting its magnification in this trophic guild compared to frugivorous bats. Copper, lead, and cadmium did not differ significantly among the other trophic guilds. This review shows that there is knowledge about concentrations of heavy metals in several Neotropical species, but knowledge about the impact of these concentrations on bat health is limited, which highlights the need for research to determine critical concentrations that cause damage to bat health, and that guide conservation actions for their populations, as well as environmental monitoring actions for these pollutants.

Climatic, oceanic, freshwater, and local environmental drivers of New Zealand estuarine macroinvertebrates

Understanding the responses of organisms to different environmental drivers is critical for improving ecosystem management and conservation. Estuarine ecosystems are under pressure from multiple anthropogenic stressors (e.g. increasing sediment and nutrient loads, pollution, climate change) that are affecting the functions and services these ecosystems provide. Here, we used long-term estuarine benthic invertebrate monitoring data (∼30 year time-series) to evaluate the responses of macrobenthic invertebrate communities and indicator species to climatic, oceanic, freshwater, and local environmental drivers in New Zealand estuaries. We aimed to improve our ability to predict ecosystem change and understand the effects of multiple environment drivers on benthic communities. Our analyses showed that the abundance and richness of macrobenthic fauna and four indicator taxa (bivalves known to have differing tolerances to sediment mud content: Austrovenus stutchburyi, Macomona liliana, Theora lubrica, and Arthritica bifurca) responded to unique combinations of multiple environmental drivers across sites and times. Macrobenthic responses were highly mixed (i.e., positive and negative) and site-dependent. We also show that responses of macrobenthic fauna were lagged and most strongly related to climatic and oceanic drivers. The way the macrobenthos responded has implications for predicting and understanding the ecological consequences of a rapidly changing environment and how we conserve and manage coastal ecosystems.

Freshwater systems in the Anthropocene: why we need to evaluate microplastics in the context of multiple stressors

Microplastics are a diverse contaminant with complex physical and chemical properties. While microplastics have varying effects, most studies to date have focused on evaluating microplastics as a single stressor under stable environmental conditions. In reality, organisms are exposed to more than microplastics, and thus, it will be increasingly important to evaluate the effects of microplastics in the context of multiple anthropogenic stressors. Here, we highlight the need to assess the physical and chemical effects of microplastics, as well as their interactions with other anthropogenic stressors, at multiple levels of biological organization (i.e., sub-organismal, individual, population, community, ecosystem). We also outline research priorities and recommendations that will facilitate ecotoxicological assessments to better encompass the multidimensionality of microplastics as environmental conditions continue to change. By taking a multi-stressor ecotoxicological approach, we can work toward a better understanding of microplastic and other stressor effects at multiple levels of biological organization to help inform robust, evidenced-based policy and management decisions.

Biological invasions in intermittent rivers and streams: current knowledge, and future frontiers

Intermittent rivers and ephemeral streams (IRES) have been overlooked in invasion science as the characteristic drying - wetting regimes are assumed to be a barrier to invasion processes. Flow contraction/cessation limits the persistence and success of water-dependent invasive alien species (IAS) in most IRES, while flash floods may restrict limnophilic and strictly terrestrial ones. However, IRES are subject to multiple anthropogenic stressors that could ultimately favour the arrival and spread of IAS and their mosaic of dynamic habitats may theoretically support both terrestrial and aquatic IAS. Successful IAS are characterised by adaptations, traits and life histories which facilitate rapid, opportunistic exploitation of habitats and resources. Here, the potential invasibility of IRES is discussed along with a summary of current knowledge gaps, examples and challenges across different continents. IAS in IRES should be considered a cause for concern but also an intriguing study system to understand the mechanics of biological invasions under global change.

Combined effects of climate warming and pharmaceuticals on a tri-trophic freshwater food web

Multiple anthropogenic stressors influence the functioning of lakes and ponds, but their combined effects are often little understood. We conducted two mesocosm experiments to evaluate the effects of warming (+4 °C above ambient temperature) and environmentally relevant concentrations of a mixture of commonly used pharmaceuticals (cardiovascular, psychoactive, antihistamines, antibiotics) on tri-trophic food webs representative of communities in ponds and other small standing waters. Communities were constituted of phyto- and zooplankton and macroinvertebrates (molluscs and insects) including benthic detritivores, grazers, omnivorous scrapers, omnivorous piercers, water column predators, benthic predators, and phytophilous predators. We quantified the main and interactive effects of warming and pharmaceuticals on each trophic level in the pelagic community and attributed them to the direct effects of both stressors and the indirect effects arising through biotic interactions. Warming and pharmaceuticals had stronger effects in the summer experiment, altering zooplankton community composition and causing delayed or accelerated emergence of top insect predators (odonates). In the summer experiment, both stressors and top predators reduced the biomass of filter-feeding zooplankton (cladocerans), while warming and pharmaceuticals had opposite effects on phytoplankton. In the winter experiment, the effects were much weaker and were limited to a positive effect of warming on phytoplankton biomass. Overall, we show that pharmaceuticals can exacerbate the effects of climate warming in freshwater ecosystems, especially during the warm season. Our results demonstrate the utility of community-level studies across seasons for risk assessment of multiple emerging stressors in freshwater ecosystems.

Rotenone impairs brain glial energetics and locomotor behavior in bumblebees

Bumblebees are essential pollinators of both wildflowers and crops and face multiple anthropogenic stressors, particularly the utilization of pesticides. Rotenone is an extensively applied neurotoxic pesticide that possesses insecticidal activities against a wide range of pests. However, whether environmentally realistic exposure levels of rotenone can damage neurons in bumblebee brains is still uncertain. Using single-cell RNA-seq, we revealed that rotenone induced cell-specific responses in bumblebee brains, emphasizing the disruption of energy metabolism and mitochondrial dysfunction in glial cells. Correspondingly, the gene regulatory network associated with neurotransmission was also suppressed. Notably, rotenone could specially reduce the number of dopaminergic neurons, impairing bumblebee's ability to fly and crawl. We also found impaired intestinal motility in rotenone-treated bumblebees. Finally, we demonstrated that many differentially expressed genes in our snRNA-seq data overlapped with rotenone-induced Parkinson's disease risk genes, especially in glial cells. Although rotenone is widely used owing to its hypotoxicity, we found that environmentally realistic exposure levels of rotenone induced disturbed glial energetics and locomotor dysfunction in bumblebees, which may lead to an indirect decline in this essential pollinator.

Impact of combined seawater warming and triazine-type herbicide pollution on the physiology and potential toxicity of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum

Coastal phytoplankton communities are often exposed to multiple anthropogenic stressors simultaneously. Here, we experimentally examined how temperature increase (20–26 °C) and triazine-type herbicides pollution (500 ng terbutryn L−1), both recognized as emerging stressors, affect the abundance, physiology and selected saxitoxin gene expression in the toxic dinoflagellate Alexandrium minutum. The results show that A. minutum is more susceptible to terbutryn pollution with increasing temperatures, resulting in a significant decline in its abundance (∼80 %) and photosynthetic activity (∼40 %), while saxitoxin gene expression increased (1.5–2.5-fold). This suggests that in warming polluted coastal areas where A. minutum is often found, saxitoxin poisoning may occur even in the absence of a massive bloom. Our results recommend the development of science-based monitoring practices for algal dissolved toxins in coastal waters and estuaries, supporting environmental policies under warming and contaminated coastal regions.

Trophic functioning of a small, anthropogenically disturbed, tropical estuary

A trophic model was constructed for the Poonthura Estuary, a small, anthropogenically impacted estuary along the south-western coast of India. An Ecopath with Ecosim based trophic modelling approach, based on observations made between 2016 and 2020, revealed that the Poonthura Estuary had a low total system throughput (3044.2 t km-2 year-1), low ascendancy (15%), high Finn’s cycling index (17.9%), low primary production/total biomass (5.2 t km-2 year-1), high mean transfer efficiency (12.4%), and low eco-exergy (14,455.46 gm detritus equivalent m-2). These values indicated that the estuary is an immature, less organized, and unhealthy system. The evaluation of Ecological Network Analysis, and ecosystem health indices revealed that the ecological structure and functioning of the estuary are impaired to a large extent from multiple anthropogenic stressors. The Poonthura Estuary trophic model revealed the total primary production/respiration value as 0.46, indicative of the massive pollution that the system is subjected to, particularly from organic sources. Small benthic carnivores were the most important keystone groups recorded from the Poonthura Estuary, despite their low biomass. The comparison of ecological indices of Poonthura Estuary, with those recorded for other small estuaries from various geographical locations, suggested dissimilar trophic functioning and food web structures from estuaries with similar physical features. Our study is a pioneering step to reveal the ecosystem status and functioning of small, anthropogenically disturbed estuaries, besides offering theoretical and scientific basis for the management, supervision and restoration of the Poonthura Estuary as well as other small estuaries, around the world.

Soil biota associated with soil N cycling under multiple anthropogenic stressors in grasslands

Soil nitrogen (N) processes and statuses are two essential components for soil N cycling in terrestrial ecosystems. Although studies have estimated the effects of multiple anthropogenic stressors (e.g., nutrient enrichment and soil acidification) on soil N cycling, how multiple trophic levels of soil biota regulate the responses of soil N processes and statuses under multiple anthropogenic stressors has not yet been studied. We established an N and phosphorus (P) enrichment and acid addition experiment in a semi-arid grassland on the Mongolian Plateau. After five years, our results showed that soil acidification strongly inhibited soil N processes (via decreasing N mineralization rate, potential nitrification rate, and potential denitrification rate) and soil N statuses (via decreasing dissolved organic N, NO3−-N, and microbial biomass N). Acid addition-induced declines in soil N processes or N statuses were mainly associated with the inhibition of the abundance/richness of soil N-related bacteria and nematodes. Compared with soil acidification, N or P enrichment had relatively minor effects on soil N processes or N statuses, except for the N enrichment-induced decline in the potential nitrification rate and increase in soil NH4+-N and P enrichment-induced decline in soil NO3−-N. Furthermore, we found that the responses of soil N processes or statuses to nutrient enrichment were different between non-acidified soils and acidified soils. Overall, our results evidenced that soil biota strongly mediated the responses of soil N processes and statuses to nutrient enrichment and acid addition in semi-arid grasslands, and soil acidification weakened the associations between soil biota and soil N cycling. These findings indicate that we should concentrate more on the importance of soil biota in maintaining ecosystem N functions and services against a background of global change.

The combined effects of treated sewage discharge and land use on rivers.

Freshwater ecosystems are increasingly threatened by multiple anthropogenic stressors. Release of treated sewage effluent and pollution from agricultural or urban sources can independently reduce water quality with implications for ecological communities. However, our knowledge of the combined effects of these stressors is limited. We performed a field study to quantify the combined effect of treated sewage discharge and land use on nutrient concentrations, sewage fungus presence and communities of macroinvertebrates and benthic algae. Over three seasons in four rivers we found that a model which included an interaction between sewage pollution and time of the year (i.e. months) was the best predictor of nutrient concentrations and the abundance of algae and sewage fungus. Both macroinvertebrate and algae communities shifted downstream of sewage input. Specifically, more tolerant groups, such as cyanobacteria and oligochaetes, were more abundant. The EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Tricoptera) water quality score was best explained by an interaction between month and agriculture in the surrounding landscape. Overall, our results show that sewage discharge has a significant impact on water quality and benthic riverine communities, regardless of the surrounding land uses. Agricultural inputs, however, could be more important than treated sewage discharge in reducing the abundance of sensitive invertebrate taxa. We need both improvements to wastewater treatment processes and reductions in agricultural pollution to reduce threats to vulnerable freshwater communities.

Fish germ cell cryobanking and transplanting for conservation.

The unprecedented loss of global biodiversity is linked to multiple anthropogenic stressors. New conservation technologies are urgently needed to mitigate this loss. The rights, knowledge and perspectives of Indigenous peoples in biodiversity conservation-including the development and application of new technologies-are increasingly recognised. Advances in germplasm cryopreservation and germ cell transplantation (termed 'broodstock surrogacy') techniques offer exciting tools to preserve biodiversity, but their application has been underappreciated. Here, we use teleost fishes as an exemplar group to outline (1) the power of these techniques to preserve genome-wide genetic diversity, (2) the need to apply a conservation genomic lens when selecting individuals for germplasm cryobanking and broodstock surrogacy and (3) the value of considering the cultural significance of these genomic resources. We conclude by discussing the opportunities and challenges of these techniques for conserving biodiversity in threatened teleost fish and beyond.

Micropollutants but high risks: Human multiple stressors increase risks of freshwater ecosystems at the megacity-scale

Micropollutants in water environments have attracted widespread attention, but how human and natural stressors influence the risks of micropollutants has not been comprehensively revealed. A megacity-scale study of the ecological risks of micropollutants in the surface water of Beijing, China is presented to illustrate the magnitudes of the influences of multiple anthropogenic and natural stressors. A total of 133 micropollutants representing typical land use patterns in Beijing, were quantified with the mean concentration range of ND (not detected) to 272 ng·L−1. The micropollutant concentrations in the south were obviously higher than those detected in the northern areas, and neonicotinoid pesticides showed the highest mean concentration of 311 ng·L−1. The chronic and acute risks of micropollutants to algae, invertebrates, and fishes were determined, and herbicides, organophosphorus esters, and insecticides account for the primary risks to algae, invertebrates, and fishes, respectively. The cropland and impervious cover cause the differences in the pollution and risks of micropollutants. The land use in riparian zones greater than 2 km shows a great influence on the chronic chemical risks (CCRs) for the three groups of species, indicating that too local scale does not explain the local pollution status. Climate conditions and human land use are important drivers explaining the CCRs to which various trophic levels of species are exposed. Results demonstrate that multiple categories of micropollutants pose adverse risks to freshwater in the megacity of Beijing, while climate conditions, pollution discharge, and human land use induce the chemical risk of micropollutants to aquatic organisms, and the land use in different riparian zones show different effects on the risks.

THE ROLE OF DRILLING PREDATION IN ISOLATED, NUTRIENT-POOR ECOSYSTEMS: FIRST INSIGHTS FROM RAPA NUI, POLYNESIA

Abstract As a biotic interaction, drilling predation is affected by the evolutionary histories of the predator and prey, as well as the environment. A unique location with distinctive evolutionary histories and environmental conditions is the remote island of Rapa Nui. For mollusks, an evolutionary history in relative isolation has led to high rates of endemism (35–40%), in an area that has some of the most nutrient-poor waters of the global ocean. Here, we use death assemblages collected in Rapa Nui to answer two main questions: (1) How does a pervasive interaction like drilling predation play out in an isolated, oligotrophic marine system? and (2) What role do the environment (exposed vs. sheltered sites) and species traits (feeding, mobility, life habit) play in ‘protecting' the prey? We predicted that predation would be low relative to other tropical and subtropical islands given the oligotrophic conditions and found that the average drilling frequency (DF) was 5.67% (n = 6122). We observed no significant differences in DF between feeding guilds, mobility types, or life habits. Sheltered sites dominated by the infaunal bivalve Ctena bella had higher predation. In terms of passive defenses for C. bella, larger body size was not an effective defense against drilling predators. We show that drilling predation in Rapa Nui is lower than in high-latitude regions, and it is dependent on how sheltered or exposed sites are. Historically and currently, Rapa Nui has been subject to multiple anthropogenic stressors, including over-extraction and tourism, making efforts to understand its endemic species and their interactions fundamental.

Unlocking foraminiferal genetic diversity on estuarine mudflats with eDNA metabarcoding

Environmental biomonitoring is a prerequisite for efficient evaluation and remediation of ecosystem degradation due to anthropogenic pressure or climate change. Estuaries are key habitats subject to multiple anthropogenic and natural stressors. Due to these multiple stressors, the detection of anthropogenic pressure is challenging. The fact that abundant natural stressors often lead to negative quality assessments has been coined the “estuarine quality paradox”. To solve this issue, the application of molecular approaches with successful bioindicators like foraminifera is promising. However, sampling protocols, molecular procedures and data analyses need to be validated before such tools can be routinely applied.We conducted an environmental DNA survey of estuarine mudflats along the French Atlantic coast, using a metabarcoding approach targeting foraminifera. Our results demonstrate that estuarine environments have only a few active OTUs dominating the community composition and a large stock of dormant or propagule stages. This last genetic diversity components constitute an important reservoir, with different species which can potentially develop in response to the temporal variability of the multiple stressors. In fact, different OTUs were dominant in the studied estuaries. Our statistical model shows that the physical and chemical characteristics of the sediment and the climatic conditions explain only 43 % of the community composition variance. This suggests that other, less easily quantifiable factors, such as the history and use of the estuaries or the ecological drift could play an important role as well. Environmental DNA biomonitoring opens new perspectives to better characterize the genetic diversity in estuaries.

Risk-based analysis of recreational ecosystem services supply and demand in beach areas of the Adriatic Sea

Beaches are important suppliers of recreational services to human beings, through bathing water resources, marine biodiversity and scenic values of coastal seascapes. This study presents a conceptual model for risk-based analysis of multiple anthropogenic stressors (e.g. nutrient load, marine litter, pollutants or pathogens) on recreational ecosystem services supply-demand patterns in beaches for seven regions of the Italian Adriatic Sea. Results of the supply-demand analysis show that the beaches in Puglia region have highest recreational supply, while demand for coastal recreation is highest in the beaches of Emilia-Romagna region, which is a region prone to mass recreational activities. Based on the supply-demand analysis we performed a risk assessment on recreational ecosystem services provision by analysing the exposure of beaches ecosystems to multiple stressors generated by different maritime (e.g. shipping, aquaculture) and land-based activities (e.g. agriculture). Beaches of the Northern Adriatic region suffer from high exposure to pollutants due to port activities, aquaculture industry, shipping, and riverine discharge. The presented study advances knowledge on the integration of ecosystem-services-based recreational supply-demand analysis in coastal areas and discusses its application potentials for sustainable management of coastal resources and the investigation of tourism flow to coastal recreational areas for large geospatial settings.

Stressor fluctuations alter mechanisms of seagrass community responses relative to static stressors

Ecosystems are increasingly affected by multiple anthropogenic stressors that contribute to habitat degradation and loss. Natural ecosystems are highly dynamic, yet multiple stressor experiments often ignore variability in stressor intensity and do not consider how effects could be mediated across trophic levels, with implications for models that underpin stressor management. Here, we investigated the in situ effects of changes in stressor intensity (i.e., fluctuations) and synchronicity (i.e., timing of fluctuations) on a seagrass community, applying the stressors reduced light and physical disturbance to the sediment. We used structural equation models (SEMs) to identify causal effects of dynamic multiple stressors on seagrass shoot density and leaf surface area, and abundance of associated crustaceans. Responses depended on whether stressor intensities fluctuated or remained static. Relative to static stressor exposure at the end of the experiment, shoot density, leaf surface area, and crustacean abundance all declined under in-phase (synchronous; 17, 33, and 30 % less, respectively) and out-of-phase (asynchronous; 11, 28, and 39 % less, respectively) fluctuating treatments. Static treatment increased seagrass leaf surface area and crustacean abundance relative to the control group. We hypothesised that crustacean responses are mediated by changes in seagrass; however, causal analysis found only weak evidence for a mediation effect via leaf surface area. Changes in crustacean abundance, therefore, were primarily a direct response to stressors. Our results suggest that the mechanisms underpinning stress responses change when stressors fluctuate. For instance, increased leaf surface area under static stress could be caused by seagrass acclimating to low light, whereas no response under fluctuating stressors suggests an acclimation response was not triggered. The SEMs also revealed that community responses to the stressors can be independent of one another. Therefore, models based on static experiments may be representing ecological mechanisms not observed in natural ecosystems, and underestimating the impacts of stressors on ecosystems.

CRISPR-Cas-Based Biomonitoring for Marine Environments: Toward CRISPR RNA Design Optimization Via Deep Learning.

Almost all of Earth's oceans are now impacted by multiple anthropogenic stressors, including the spread of nonindigenous species, harmful algal blooms, and pathogens. Early detection is critical to manage these stressors effectively and to protect marine systems and the ecosystem services they provide. Molecular tools have emerged as a promising solution for marine biomonitoring. One of the latest advancements involves utilizing CRISPR-Cas technology to build programmable, rapid, ultrasensitive, and specific diagnostics. CRISPR-based diagnostics (CRISPR-Dx) has the potential to allow robust, reliable, and cost-effective biomonitoring in near real time. However, several challenges must be overcome before CRISPR-Dx can be established as a mainstream tool for marine biomonitoring. A critical unmet challenge is the need to design, optimize, and experimentally validate CRISPR-Dx assays. Artificial intelligence has recently been presented as a potential approach to tackle this challenge. This perspective synthesizes recent advances in CRISPR-Dx and machine learning modeling approaches, showcasing CRISPR-Dx potential to progress as a rising molecular tool candidate for marine biomonitoring applications.

Understory plant growth forms respond independently to combined natural and anthropogenic disturbances

Natural disturbances can maintain forest diversity by creating a heterogeneous resource landscape, which can contribute to coexistence of early- and late-successional species. However, almost all forested ecosystems are also subject to multiple anthropogenic stressors, which could inhibit plant diversity and forest recovery after natural disturbances. Here, we present the first large-scale replicated field experiment testing the interactions among two natural and two anthropogenic disturbances in a mature secondary temperate forest. Specifically, we test the extent to which: 1. a natural windthrow (tornado), 2. deer browsing, 3. salvage logging, a common forestry practice to generate revenue after natural disturbances, and 4. mechanical removal of the understory, drive subsequent plant community assembly, diversity, and abundance. Our results have two clear messages. First, the combined disturbances, especially salvage logging, increased plant species richness and abundance; we found 65 more species in 0.1 ha of the disturbed areas versus the same area of reference forest. Second, we found that it was critical to analyze plant growth forms separately; each major plant growth form responded to the disturbances differently. Surprisingly, salvage logging, browsing, and vegetation removal had negligible effects on the diversity and abundance of tree seedlings or saplings. In contrast, salvaging increased herb richness by 30% (six extra species per 36 m2 plot), and shrubs were twice as abundant in salvaged versus unsalvaged plots. The combined disturbances created unique plant communities in comparison to adjacent undisturbed reference sites, but plant growth forms differed in which combination of disturbances shifted community composition the most. We did not find that non-native invasive species substantially increased in abundance in response to the disturbances, nor were invasive species unique to the salvaged areas. Together, our results demonstrate that a patchwork of combined natural and anthropogenic disturbances can promote plant diversity in a human-modified temperate forest. In particular, the combination of a natural wind disturbance and salvage logging benefited native herbaceous species, the plant group that represents the vast majority of vascular plant species (∼80%) in temperate forests across the world.

Chemical Mixtures and Multiple Stressors: Same but Different?

Ecosystems are strongly influenced by multiple anthropogenic stressors, including a wide range of chemicals and their mixtures. Studies on the effects of multiple stressors have largely focussed on nonchemical stressors, whereas studies on chemical mixtures have largely ignored other stressors. However, both research areas face similar challenges and require similar tools and methods to predict the joint effects of chemicals or nonchemical stressors, and frameworks to integrate multiple chemical and nonchemical stressors are missing. We provide an overview of the research paradigms, tools, and methods commonly used in multiple stressor and chemical mixture research and discuss potential domains of cross-fertilization and joint challenges. First, we compare the general paradigms of ecotoxicology and (applied) ecology to explain the historical divide. Subsequently, we compare methods and approaches for the identification of interactions, stressor characterization, and designing experiments. We suggest that both multiple stressor and chemical mixture research are too focused on interactions and would benefit from integration regarding null model selection. Stressor characterization is typically more costly for chemical mixtures. While for chemical mixtures comprehensive classification systems at suborganismal level have been developed, recent classification systems for multiple stressors account for environmental context. Both research areas suffer from rather simplified experimental designs that focus on only a limited number of stressors, chemicals, and treatments. We discuss concepts that can guide more realistic designs capturing spatiotemporal stressor dynamics. We suggest that process-based and data-driven models are particularly promising to tackle the challenge of prediction of effects of chemical mixtures and nonchemical stressors on (meta-)communities and (meta-)food webs.
